Rayon from Wood Pulp or Bamboo:
Rayon is a semi-synthetic fiber made from natural cellulose fibers extracted from wood pulp or bamboo.
The process begins with the harvesting of wood pulp or bamboo, which is then processed to extract the cellulose. This cellulose is typically dissolved in a chemical solvent to create a viscous liquid.
The viscous liquid is then extruded through spinnerets into a coagulating bath where the cellulose regenerates into long filaments, forming fibers.
These fibers are then washed, bleached, and dried to produce rayon yarn, which can be woven or knitted into fabric.
Polyester:
Polyester is a fully synthetic fiber made from petrochemicals, specifically ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid (or dimethyl terephthalate).
The production process starts with the extraction of crude oil, which is refined to obtain ethylene glycol.
Terephthalic acid or dimethyl terephthalate is derived from either petroleum or natural gas.
The ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid (or dimethyl terephthalate) are reacted together under high heat and pressure to create a polymer, which is then extruded through spinnerets to form fibers.
These fibers are solidified through a cooling process and then stretched to improve strength and durability.
Finally, the polyester fibers are cut into desired lengths and spun into yarn, which can be woven or knitted into fabric.
While both rayon fabric and polyester are fibers used in textile production, rayon is derived from natural cellulose sources and undergoes a chemical process to create fibers, whereas polyester is a fully synthetic fiber derived from petrochemicals and produced through polymerization and extrusion processes.
